Digital Ad Guidance, an Event Review, and… Chocolate Chip Cookies!
A batch made in heaven.
Let us be the first to wish you a Happy National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day! Although there is some dispute to this story, it has been said the creation of America’s most popular cookie was accidental. While preparing chocolate cookies, a shortage of baker’s chocolate led to chopped up blocks of chocolate being added to the mix instead. The assumption that these blocks would melt evenly was false—and the rest is history… possibly!
What’s not debated is the story of the baker’s compensation. Ruth Wakefield was paid for her recipe with a lifetime supply of chocolate! While some might have mixed feelings about that deal, Graves's recipe is still printed on the back of chocolate chip bags—making it one of the most famous recipes in the world. This also drove traffic to her restaurant and helped turn her cookbook into a best-seller. Overall, I guess you can “choc” that up to excellent negotiating skills.
Summit. Speaking of cookies, we served them at our recent policy summit. If you missed out, there’s no need to have a chip on your shoulder. You can check out our YouTube playlist with all four panels here. Corbin’s live recording of the Tech Policy Podcast is also up and running. And if you’re in a rush we’ve also got a free sample of the event on our Substack page. Enjoy!
FTC. On Tuesday, Bilal filed comments to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding the agency’s Request for Information on revisions to the existing guidance on effective disclosures in digital advertising. No significant changes are necessary to align the Guidelines with current agency practice—and the most useful change would be to expand the examples provided by the Commission. The Commission should also allow multiple requests for public comment and at least one public workshop. For more of Bilal’s work on the FTC, check out our recent comments on merger enforcement. And Corbin’s piece in City Journal. Our press release can be found here and shared on Twitter here.
