It’s the Super Bowl of Internet Speech Law
Plus space law, kids’ safety, why the future needs industry, and more…
Content Moderation: It’s been a uniquely busy week for this topic, thanks to the cases NetChoice v. Paxton and Moody v. NetChoice, challenging social media content moderation laws in Texas and Florida, respectively; the Supreme Court heard both on Monday. Here’s what we’ve been up to:
In The Daily Beast, Corbin discussed Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s emphasis on the government action that’s needed to implicate the First Amendment—and his skepticism of the challenged Florida and Texas laws, which restrict how private platforms may moderate content. (Also mentioned in The Verge)
Ari participated in a press conference and was quoted by USA TODAY, CNBC, the Washington Post, and The Hill.
On Twitter, Corbin did a live thread for the cases’ oral arguments.
Reason quoted him afterward.
Corbin also discussed the event on the Ross Kaminsky Show.
Last but not least, he did an event at the Cato Institute.
Kids’ Online Safety: We joined a letter for the Invest in Child Safety Act of 2024, a bill that aims to stop child exploitation online with effective and constitutional measures, not censorship of lawful content.
Podcast: The latest Tech Policy Podcast, which featured Brandon Gorrell, got a mention in The White Pill, his newsletter (three free articles paywall).
Commercial Space Development: City Journal highlighted Corbin’s 2023 essay on commercial space development. What he wrote then is still true: “The United States remains ahead, for now. But will that last?”
At oral argument, Justice Alito asked how much YouTube would weigh if it were a newspaper.
All we know is that it’s less if you never read the comments.
