On Giving Tuesday, Free Speech Needs Your Help
Dear Friend of TechFreedom,
The First Amendment is under attack in the courts, in Congress, and in many state legislatures—and we need your help to defend it!
Since our launch in 2010, TechFreedom has been the premier technology policy think tank dedicated to free markets, free speech, and civil liberties. The First Amendment is supposed to be a shield against government meddling but increasingly, politicians claim it’s a sword they can wield in the name of “fairness.”
Like newspapers, websites shouldn’t be forced to host speech they don’t want to. But that’s exactly what new Texas and Florida laws would do. The Supreme Court may soon rule on these laws. As our amicus brief explained to the Justices, these laws break content moderation—and open the floodgates for content that promotes self-harm, Holocaust denial, white supremacism, and much, much more. Yes, the First Amendment protects the right to say awful things, but also the right of private websites—and their users—not to associate with them.
We’ve played a key role at every step of these cases in the appeals courts. Judges have quoted our briefs. With your help through a tax-deductible donation, we’ll keep up the fight.
We’ve also warned Congress that pending bills will similarly be weaponized against private editorial judgments—over and over and over again. Groups across the ideological spectrum and leading Internet law professors have signed onto our letters.
TechFreedom’s Corbin Barthold recently asked, in The Bulwark: “When will we stop taking liberal democracy for granted?” We don’t. We know it takes hard work—and careful lawyering—to defend. But we can’t do it without your help. This Giving Tuesday, can we count on you to donate $25 today?
Thank you!
